Vox style grill cloth (black or brown)
Vox grill cloth in brown (up to around 1963) or black (roughly 1964 on). Cut from the roll for your order and sold by length in 10cm units to be supplied as one continuous piece. In other words, if you order 5 × 10cm lengths, that will come as a single 50cm piece.
Note that the long axis of the diamonds is woven across the roll (see the first image) and that the rolls have approximately 1m 20cm of useable pattern plus 5cm of ‘selvage’ (the unusable bit at the edges) each side.
SO … measure the width of the cabinet you are planning to cover, add at least 5cm to allow you to wrap it around the back of the baffle and a few cm to allow you to position the cloth symmetrically (← top tip), round up to the nearest 10cm and this will be the length of cloth that you need to purchase.
Purely for guidance only (it is your responsibility to measure carefully, preferably twice):
30cm is comfortably enough to do most of the head cabs (AC30 Supertwin, AC50, AC100 etc.)
40cm is just enough to cover an AC30 Twin or a similar sized super twin 2×12 cab.
50cm is about right for an AC30 ‘Expanded frequency’ or an AC50 ‘Big box’ cab and similar.
70cm is enough for one of the big UL series cab (UL460 etc.)
100cm will do one of the upright 2×15 (or 1×15, 1×12) bass cabs often called T60 or AC100 bass cabs.
This also means that the maximum height of grille that can be covered (with the diamonds correctly oriented) is approximately 1m 20cm. This is only likely to be an issue with, for example PA columns as all other common vox cabs are well below 1m.
Cloth will be supplied in one continuous piece, rolled to minimize creasing. However, the maximum permitted length of parcel that Royal Mail will accept is 90cm so the edge will be folded in to enable us to post it. Creases disappear when the cloth is stretched to fit.
The cloth used on Vox amps has changed through time. This is modern style grill cloth and will most closely match the recent (Korg era) Vox amps and cabs. It is similar but will not be an exactly match for either the pattern or colour of vintage JMI cloth or ‘Rose Morris’ era cloth.
