Vox style grill cloth (black or brown)
Vox grill cloth in either Brown (up to around 1963) or Black (roughly 1964 on). Cut from the roll for your order and sold in metric 10cm units. The cloth used on Vox amps has changed through time: this is modern style grill cloth and will most closely match the recent (Korg era) Vox amps and cabs. It is similar but will not be an exactly match for either the vintage JMI cloth or ‘Rose Morris’ era cloth.
If you need a sample of cloth see https://www.vintageamporium.co.uk/shop/p/vox-style-grill-cloth-black-or-brown-mkgfp.
Note that the long axis of the diamonds is woven across the roll (see the first image) and the rolls have approximately 1m 20cm of useable pattern plus 5cm of ‘selvage’ (the unusable bit at the edges) so you should measure the width that you need to cover — TIP: add at least 5cm/2” to allow you to wrap it around the back of the baffle and another 2-3cm/1” to allow you to position the cloth symmetrically — and this will be the length of cloth that you need.
Cloth will be supplied in one continuous piece, rolled and shipped in a postal tube to minimise creasing. Note that the maximum length that can ship unfolded is 80cm, after which it has to be folded at around 85cm in order to fit the maximum length permitted for postal tube. Creases disappear when the cloth is stretched to fit.
For example:
If you order 5 units, you will recieve a single 50cm wide x 120cm long piece, rolled up in a postal tube.
If you order 10 units, you will receive a single 100cm wide x 120cm long cloth, folded at 85cm wide, then rolled up and sent in a postal tube.
If your cab is 28” (72cm) WIDE you will need 28”+3” (72cm + 8cm) = c. 31” (80cm) so you will need to order 80cm and will receive a single piece that is 80cm wide and 1m 20cm long.
Purely for guidance (it is your responsibility to measure carefully, preferably twice):
40cm will cover one LS40 (4×10) speaker column (but NOT the 4×12 LS60 column which taller than the width of these rolls), also many of the AC4 and similar small amps.
50cm will do one of the narrow vertical T60 (one 12” + one 15”) or AC100 bass (2×15) cabs.
60cm is enough to do an AC50, AC100 head cab or a Foundation Bass (1x18) cab and also the single-speaker 1960s AC15.
70cm will cover two LS40 (4×10) column speakers
80cm will cover an AC30 Twin or a super-twin 2×12 cab, also AC30 super-twin head cabs, also the 28”x40” AC100/Supreme sized guitar cabs with (4×12 plus two horns), it is also just enough for the 2×12 Conqueror cab but NOT the Defiant 2×12 (see below)
90cm will cover an AC30 ‘Expanded frequency’, AC50 ‘Big box’ cab, 2×12 Defiant cab and similar.
100cm is enough for a Supreme or one of the big UL series cab (UL460 etc.)
There is no limit on the width of the cabinet that can be covered but the maximum height that can be covered (with the diamonds correctly oriented) is approximately 1m 15cm. This is only likely to be an issue with, for example PA columns as all other common vox cabs are well below 1m.
