2005 Gibson Custom Shop CS-356 faded cherry figured maple
2005 Gibson Custom Shop CS-356 semi-hollow
This is a rare and extremely beautiful Gibson Custom shop CS-356 in faded cherry red. Made in 2005, this example is in outstanding condition with very few signs of wear.
The CS-356 is the premium version of the CS-336 (with better appointments and a highly figured top). It has a compact body somewhat similar to the ES-339 but (unlike the laminate construction of the ES-335, ES-339 and relatives) the CS-356 has a chambered mahogany body with a solid maple top. This makes for a compact and easy-to-play semi-acoustic that sits somewhere between a Les Paul and the more open tones of a semi-hollow body. The shape is extremely comfortable and this example weighs in at only 7lbs (3.16kg) on my scales.
As a Custom Shop guitar - and the premium version at that - this is a supremely well crafted and beautifully appointed guitar. It features a beautifully figured maple top which shows nicely through the stunning faded cherry finish. The colour is complemented by the gold hardware for a simply gorgeous looking guitar. There are pearl diamond inlays on the headstock and block inlays on the fingerboard.
The mahogany neck has a medium C-shape and 22 medium jumbo frets that I can see no appreciable wear on. Pickups are '57 Classics and all the electrics are working perfectly. The action is excellent, the neck straight and the guitar plays as well as it looks.
The condition of the guitar should be evident from the photographs: there are no significant dents, dings or repairs, no buckle rash to the rear and just a few very minor swirls and surface marks to the finish. The hardware is also in excellent condition with very little scratching to the pickup covers and a little tarnishing to the jack plate and stoptail. These really do not come up for sale often and this is as good an example as you are likely to find.
The guitar will come in the original hard case, certificate of authenticity, tags, factory checklist and more (as shown).
