Lovely early silverface Bassman 50 head - very clean, very original example with the benefit of the original multi-voltage transformer and a couple of discrete and useful mods.
Although it has an exotic ‘Export’ name, this is just a Bassman 50 with a multi-voltage power transformer for the international market. It dates from 1971 (the original transformers show 1970 and 1971 codes) so not far enough into the CBS period for them to have messed with these amps too much. I’m not sure if the 1.0032 stamp on the outside of the chassis is a serial number or something else but the chassis is stamped April 1971 internally which matches perfectly with the transformer codes and the tube chart.
Condition
The case and panel are in superb condition - the panel has almost no marks and the tolex is in great shape on the case, which still has the tube chart perfectly intact. Inside, it is also really clean - the main board is largely un-changed, the power supply has had filter caps and load resistors renewed as part of the service and the bias balance pot has a bias adjustment trimmer added to enable the overall bias to be adjusted as well as the tube balance.
This little head sounds fantastic and - as with all Bassman amps - this sounds great clean but even better as it starts to break up, which happens organically around 6-8 on the dial. It has been thoroughly serviced and the bias adjusted before being inspected by JB Amp Repairs (https://www.jbamprepairs.co.uk) whose report is included. The amp comes with a new set of Tung Sol power tubes and a mix of pre-amp tubes.
NFB mod
In addition to the bias adjustment, this amp has a useful negative feedback mod that makes use of the redundant 3-way ground switch. This allows the amp to run with the original (stock) NFB, half or none at all expanding the range of sounds and touch sensitivity that it can deliver. This can be viewed, inspected and played at my Southampton base or I’m happy to organise a video call (teams, zoom, facetime etc.) where we can go over the amp and test out some sounds.
