Selmer ‘Croc Skin’ Little Giant

This little gem is a Silver Croc-skin Little Giant #14503 dating to between 1963 and 65. It is a 4-watt valve rectified single ended amp with a EZ80 rectifier, single ECC83 preamp and one EL84 output tube into a 6” speaker.

Internally this has original transformers, a Brimar rectifier and Mullard ECC83 & EL84 driving the original Elac speaker which is still in excellent condition. It has had the usual service items replaced (electrolytic capacitors etc.) and the on/off volume pot is a replacement. The heater wires have also been lifted from the traces and run on a twisted pair of wires (which reduces hum). A couple of things have also been restored since the photo was taken, so contact us for exact details if you need them (it will come with a layout diagram and schematic for future reference, incidentally).

Externally, the gorgeous and saught-after ‘croc skin’ case and handle are also in great condition. The back panel has been replaced with an accurate replica of the original (which is still with the amp but is pretty warped and one of the cable retainers is missing) and the new panel now sports the original serial number plate.

Everything works as it should and despite its diminutive size (15½" x 5½" x 9" / 390 x 260 x 140 mm … people regularly mistake it for an old transistor radio!) it produces a surprisingly big sound. The simple front-mounted controls provide two knobs for on/volume and tone plus a pilot light. Volume and tone are quite interactive and the amp begins to break up around halfway on the volume (depending on where you have the tone knob set). Originally designed as a practice amp, the  low output really encourages you to crank both the volume and the tone up and you are rewarded with a rich classic distortion with beautiful harmonic overtones at levels that won’t upset the neighbours.

Both Keith Richards and Rory Gallagher played these amps in their time and in the ‘80s Rory is supposed to have said “I used a Selmer Little Giant amp, but I got rid of it because it was distorting! If I had it now I’d be delighted!

The bespoke cover is included with this amp.
