Fender Tremolux and cab c.1965

Sold Out

c. 35w Tremolux piggy-back amp head with its original 2×10 cab.

This is the black-panel era (pre-CBS) Tremolux with the legendary AB763 circuit* and is a rare and sought-after amp. These were only made for a couple of years and the majority are in black rather than blonde. Ths one is for players, not collectors, and is a really sweet sounding amp. Being the lowest output of the piggy-back amps, it can be played at sensible volumes.

The head has replacement transformers but they’re as good as they come: the correct Mercury Magnetics output transformer and a 240v Tube Doctor mains transformer (which has unused 220 and 230v taps in case you are based in Europe). Beyond that, all the Molded Blue caps are in place, as you’d hope, and the amp has been well serviced, having been acquired from a touring musician who needed it to be reliable (filter caps have been replaced, also the cathode-bypass and bias caps). The amp has just had the transformers upgraded, serviced, the lovely Tremolo repaired and carefully modernised. It has a new mains lead with the ground switch left in place but disconnected (no death cap in this one). The amp also has an elevated centre tap installed on the heaters which all but eliminates mains hum**.

The cab is original but a previous owner has cut 10” circular holes in the back panel (presumably because they prefered an open-back sound. I’ve manufactured some sturdy covers for those that can be removed if needed so the cab can now operate as either open-back or (as the amp was designed for) closed back cab. Speakers are Fender Eminence 10" AINiCo 036457 from around 1996 (as used by Fender in their hand wired re-issues at that time). These are great speakers but I can also fit Jensens or Oxford reissues as preferred.

Awaiting tech reports, PAT test and photography/listing.

* The tube chart says AA763 but Fender used the stickers until they ran out and this one either was or has been updated to the AB763 circuit.

** This is a very cool, minor mod that has no impact on the sound of the amp. It just raises the reference voltage of the valve heater circuit which dramatically lowers the amount of 50-cycle mains hum that the amp produces.
